Firstly I'd like to say that I do not think or claim to be an expert on anything. The only thing I can write about is the sum of my experiences. I am a Pilates Instructor, avid runner and love to keep fit and healthy. I love spending time with my family and understand the pressures of modern living, motherhood, and keeping the balance.
The pursuit of Happiness has been troubling humanity since the beginning of time. I think that this is basically what everyone wants. Sometimes we lose our way in the pursuit, we are constantly bombarded by media on our phones, t.v, sign posts and images everywhere we go.
We are told that by having a better, bigger, more luxurious, more expensive house, car, lifestyle, and even body we will be happy. Ultimately this is not true. Why? because it doesn't nourish our being, our soul or spirit. In fact, it does the opposite. It is the job of marketers around the world to convince us that we will not be completely happy unless we have or become what they are selling. It's a game, a trap and a way for them to make a living. What we need to do is make the choices that suit us best. Yes, some of what is on offer is nice, worthwhile and adds value to our lives.
But, do these things make us happy?
I spent quite some time secretly preoccupied with a thought recently. It was all because of a comment someone made about my appearance. They were studying to be a clinical beautician. You know, those people that use injectables to alter the appearance of someone, fill fine lines etc. Anyway, I was told by them that I should consider having my marionette lines filled. This sent me on a very self conscious obsession about my hideous marionette lines. I asked a few people about it and they thought I was crazy, but I couldn't get this thought out of my head and I thought that it was a serious flaw in my outward appearance. Eventually I overcame this, by really taking a good look at my life. Was I prepared to get these offensive lines filled? No.
So, was it really such a problem? No.
So, why spend time thinking about something that I must be happy with as I wasn't prepared to spend good money on altering my appearance. Would I be happier with an altered appearance? No, because basically I feel that looking and being natural is where true beauty lies.
I believe the only true happiness can come from within. We are a collection of our experience. For the most part, where I am lucky enough to live (Gold Coast Australia), we are able to choose what experiences we want. We choose our work life (usually because we are good at or enjoy something), we choose where we want to live, what to eat, how we spend our free time. So these experiences help to make us who we are. We can choose to be positive or negative about our experiences. We aren't always going to have 'good' days. But when we look at the 'big picture', the 'whole life' that is how we can judge our happiness. Everyday we mix with people, family, friends and strangers. We have interactions with them at home, work and various other places we go. These are the moments that feed us, nourish our spirits and fill our souls. These are the defining moments that we can base our happiness on.
So the next time you are down on yourself because you aren't happy with your work, home, lifestyle or appearance think about the big picture. Is this temporary unhappiness at your current state or is it the feeling of being unsatisfied with the status quo? If it is the latter, know you have the power to change it, you have the power to pursue what makes your spirit shine. If it is the former, ride the wave and know that everyone has their ups and downs. Pick up a good book, go for a walk or do something that fills you up.
